When it comes to planning engagement shoots, the pressure is real – especially if you don’t have some go-to poses up your sleeve. Coming prepared will alleviate some of the photo shoot jitters (for you and the happy couple) and allow you to focus your efforts on creating emotive images that showcase your subjects’ personalities and love for one another.

The simple, sweet forehead kiss
Not every couple is going to be totally comfortable in front of the camera; in this case, it’s always nice to have some posing ideas that don’t require your subjects to be photographed head-on. Some of our favorite poses for shy couples include a simple, sweet forehead kiss or interlocking fingers!
Instruct one of your subjects to bring their hands together under their lover’s chin, then lift their head as they softly plant a kiss on their forehead! Then, have them link fingers and hands as they hover over each other’s lips.
A playful piggyback shot
For the more outgoing, adventurous couples, make sure you have tons of different engagement poses at the ready because they’ll be up for some fun! Start with some more energetic poses with movement, like a playful piggyback shot. Instruct one partner to give the other a piggyback ride and look back at you as they walk (or run) away! The more laughter, the better!
Get the couple extra cozy
Not all engagement photography is for Save the Dates and invitations – some will be just for the happy couple to display in their home or elsewhere. If your clients are seeking more intimate portraits, get them cozy – either in the bedroom or elsewhere! Have one partner crawl on top of the other and touch noses, or, have them straddle their partner and hold them close, with their foreheads touching. Then, just instruct them to breathe each other in. They’ll treasure these gorgeous photos forever!
The surprise proposal
If your shoot was initially scheduled as a couple’s shoot and one of the partners filled you in on a little secret – that they’re proposing! – this surprise engagement pose is definitely one you should coordinate beforehand! Tell the proposee to look away for a few seconds and then look back while the proposing partner gets down on one knee. Get ready to snap some more candid photos, because it’s about to get emotional!
The perfect pup shot
Chances are, if they have a four-legged family member, a little one, an ecstatic family (or all three!), you’re going to need more than just engagement poses up your sleeve to make some magic happen! One idea for engagement photos with dogs: have the couple sit facing away from the camera with the pup in the center. This engagement pose looks best when admiring something scenic, like calm, serene water or a mountain landscape. This is a great option for any type of couple – camera-shy, adventurous, you name it!
